Fruit Sugar vs. Processed Sugar: Why is fruit better for me?

At some point, I’m sure we’ve all conquered our monster cravings and replaced a decadent dessert with a piece of fruit because we knew it was better for us. But have you ever sat down and actually thought about why it’s supposedly better? Believe it […]

Coconut Sugar

Coconut Sugar

What is coconut sugar?

The crystallized sap from the flower of the coconut palm. It’s most similar in color and flavor to brown sugar.

Why is coconut sugar better than white table sugar?

The manufacturing process. White table sugar is heavily refined with chemicals added to it during manufacturing. Coconut sugar goes through a natural manufacturing process.

What is the natural process of coconut sugar?

Three-steps:

  1. A cut is made on the flower of the coconut palm and the liquid sap is collected into containers (think maple syrup).
  2. The sap is placed under heat until most of the water evaporates.
  3. The final product is crystallized coconut sugar.

You can use small amounts in baking, substituting for brown sugar works great.

What kind of coconut sugar should I buy?

Raw Honey

Raw Honey

What is raw honey?

Unheated honey. You can even go more natural and get unfiltered raw honey, which means that it can have particles of honeycomb, pollen or bee body parts in it. It’s typically a bit opaque in color.

Why is raw honey better for me than regular honey?

It’s a superfood. The enzymes, which the honeybees add while it’s in their “honey stomach”, along with the natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals haven not been killed off in the heating process . These natural enzymes and nutrients help ward off harmful bacteria and viruses in your gut (i.e.: your intestines).

The “energy crashes” you sometimes get after eating regular honey (or any other processed sugar) will be reduced because it doesn’t raise your blood sugar levels as much.

Okay…What kind of raw honey should I buy?

Any kind that has the ingredient being “raw honey”. That’s it. Just do your body a favor and stop buying that fake, totally see through, syrupy honey. It’s crap. The kind I typically buy is Nature Nate’s 100% Pure, Raw and Unfiltered Honey, 32 Ounce

*Disclaimer

Remember, it’s still sugar, so if you’re planning on using a bottle a week then don’t plan on shedding pounds. It’s not a miracle worker!
